Chapter 2107 Moving into the Governor's Residence
Chapter 2107 Moving into the Governor's Residence
Yan Ruyu did not take Chunni back to the Su residence, but instead led her to the busiest street in the city.
The aroma of food stalls wafted from the street, with wontons and freshly baked sesame cakes tempting people's appetites.
Seeing this, Yan Ruyu slowed down and asked her with a smile, "What would you like to eat? Zhang's Wonton over there is quite good."
Chunni shook her head somewhat reservedly: "No need to spend money, I'll just eat something simple."
"Since we're here, let's make the best of it." Without further ado, Yan Ruyu pulled her into the wonton shop.
The shop was clean and tidy, with many diners sitting around several wooden tables. Steaming hot wontons were served, emitting a wonderful aroma.
The owner quickly brought over two bowls of wontons, with thin wrappers, generous fillings, clear broth, and sprinkled with scallions and sesame oil.
Chunni looked at the wontons in the bowl, then at Yan Ruyu, her eyes reddening slightly.
"To be honest, I've been eating dry rations all this way, and it's been a long time since I've had anything so hot."
"Then eat quickly, don't be shy," Yan Ruyu handed her a pair of chopsticks.
Chunni took the chopsticks, carefully picked up a wonton, blew on it before putting it in her mouth.
She ate slowly, savoring each bite. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught Yan Ruyu looking at her gently, and blushed again.
After finishing the wontons, Yan Ruyu took her to the tea stall on the street corner.
Although the tea stalls are not as grand as teahouses, they are very lively. There are storytellers telling tales, and the area is surrounded by listeners, with cheers coming from time to time.
Chunni held the warm teacup, hesitated for a moment, then looked up and asked softly, "What exactly do you do?"
Yan Ruyu picked up her teacup, took a sip, and said with a smile in her eyes and a relaxed tone, "I'm just a businessman."
"Doing business?" Chunni blinked, somewhat curious. "What kind of business?"
"I'll do whatever you need." Yan Ruyu smiled, not going into details, but instead asked, "You don't have a place to stay, I'll arrange it for you later."
Chunni hesitated, but Yan Ruyu said again, "I know you're worried about your father. Don't worry, with Baishitong's help, we'll definitely be able to find him."
"Just stay in the city and rest well for the next few days. Get plenty of rest and wait for news."
Chunni looked up, her eyes filled with gratitude: "Thank you..."
Yan Ruyu raised her chin and pointed to the teahouse over there.
Do you know where that is?
Chunni shook her head: "I don't know, it looks like a teahouse."
"That's right. The owner of that teahouse is a heinous criminal who is wanted by the authorities and is being hunted throughout the city."
Yan Ruyu smiled and said, "I plan to buy the teahouse, renovate it, and reopen it."
“There’s another pharmacy over there, also owned by this wicked man. Once you find your father, if you’re willing, I can buy the pharmacy and let you and your father manage it, so you’ll have a place to stay.”
Chunni was taken aback: "Buy it?"
Yan Ruyu nodded and said casually, "Yes, teahouses, pharmacies, anything that was owned by that villain before, we can buy it."
"Didn't I say I'm in business?"
Chunni nodded: "I see."
Yan Ruyu smiled faintly: "You don't need to feel guilty. Everyone in the city knows that this person is extremely evil and does all sorts of evil deeds. Even if you capture him and tear him apart, it will be difficult to appease people's anger."
"Look at the streets today, the people are all beaming with joy. I suppose it wasn't like this when you came a few days ago?"
"It's because this man's family was wiped out these past few days, and today several of his doubles were killed. Even though they were doubles, the people are very happy, which shows how much they are hated."
Chunni nodded slowly.
Yan Ruyu stood up: "Let's go, I'll take you to your place."
The sun was shining brightly, and the street in front of the governor's mansion should have been busier than other places, but it was very quiet and solemn.
A dozen or so officers and soldiers stood on either side of the gate, long swords at their waists, their postures upright as pine trees, their gazes calmly sweeping over the passersby, exuding an aura of authority that could not be easily offended.
Chunni followed behind Yan Ruyu, her pace unconsciously slowing down.
She was still wearing that worn-out coarse cloth dress, the cuffs of which were worn and faded, which was out of place with the vermilion lacquered pillars and bronze rings and animal heads of the governor's mansion in front of her.
She glanced up and saw the plaque above the gate that read "Prefect's Residence," with its black background and gold lettering, exuding a solemn and imposing air. She couldn't help but purse her lips, feeling increasingly uneasy.
She finally couldn't help but speak, her voice hesitant and tentative: "How...how did we get here?"
Upon hearing this, Yan Ruyu stopped and softened her tone: "This is the accommodation arranged for you."
"W-what?" Chunni's eyes widened suddenly, and she subconsciously shrank back. "Are you kidding me? This is the governor's mansion. I... I'm just an ordinary commoner. How dare I live in a place like this?"
A faint smile flashed across Yan Ruyu's eyes as she patiently explained, "You don't need to panic. Governor Ding is a good official. The Liu family was able to be destroyed so quickly not only because of the efforts of Envoy Su, but also because Governor Ding secretly contributed a lot. He provided a lot of evidence of the Liu family's crimes."
She paused, then turned her gaze to the soldiers in front of the gate, her tone becoming more solemn: "The Liu family has been operating for many years and has made many enemies, and the remaining members are even more ruthless."
Now that they have fallen from power, it's hard to guarantee that no one will take the risk of secretly retaliating against Governor Ding. To ensure the governor's safety, the city magistrate of Su has already dispatched a considerable number of men to protect him.
Chunni listened, stunned.
Yan Ruyu stepped aside to clear the way from the direction of the mansion gate behind her: "If you are allowed to stay here, there will be soldiers patrolling and protecting you day and night, so you will be safe."
Chunni's unease lessened slightly, but she still hesitated: "But... but if I stay here, won't I cause trouble for the governor?"
“No,” Yan Ruyu said decisively. “Prefect Ding already knows about this matter, and he has given his approval. You can just settle in without any worries.”
Seeing that Yan Ruyu spoke earnestly and it didn't seem like a joke, Chunni bit her lip, looked up at the magnificent mansion gate, and finally nodded.
"Then...that will be troublesome. Thank you very much, Prefect Ding."
Yan Ruyu smiled slightly: "No need for formalities, please come in with me."
Chunni took a deep breath, tightened her small bundle, and followed Yan Ruyu into the governor's mansion.
Upon entering the mansion, she was so astonished by the sight before her that she forgot to speak.
Underfoot is a smooth and shiny bluestone path, with neatly trimmed hedges on both sides, interspersed with a few flowering trees in full bloom, their pink and white petals falling among the emerald green leaves, which is quite beautiful.
Walking further in, you pass a beautifully carved stone arch bridge. Under the bridge, the water flows gently, koi carp frolic, and willows sway gracefully in the breeze along the bank.
In the distance are rows of houses with blue bricks and gray tiles, with upturned eaves and corners, arranged in a pleasing and orderly manner, and red lanterns hanging under the eaves, exuding a touch of elegance.
As Yan Ruyu walked, she said softly, "The mansion is quite large. Your courtyard is on the west side, which is relatively quiet and you won't be disturbed."
After walking for about half a cup of tea's time, we arrived at a small courtyard.
