Chapter 2108 The Prefect is Assassinated
Chapter 2108 The Prefect is Assassinated
Two magnolia trees stood in front of the courtyard gate. Although they were not in bloom at the moment, their branches and leaves were lush and abundant. Pushing open the gate, one could see that the courtyard was paved with bluestone slabs. There was a main house on the east side and a side room on each side, all bright and clean.
"This is your residence," Yan Ruyu said. "Take a look and see if it suits your taste."
Chunni entered the main room and saw that the furnishings were simple yet exquisite. She quickly turned around and gave Yan Ruyu a deep bow, saying, "Thank you so much. This place is very nice and well-designed."
After calming herself down a bit, she remembered something and looked up to ask, "I wonder if Governor Ding is at home right now? I would like to express my gratitude in person for taking you in."
Yan Ruyu smiled upon hearing this, a gentle smile in her eyes: "No need to be so polite. Governor Ding is currently meeting with important guests in the front hall and is probably unable to leave."
You don't need to make a special trip to see them, and don't be shy; just make yourself at home.
She paused, then added, "By the way, you're not the only one staying in the manor now; there are several other guests. However, everyone lives separately, so we rarely run into each other. You don't need to worry about it."
"There are other guests?" Chunni blinked curiously and couldn't help but ask, "What kind of guests are they? Are they also... also here because of the Liu family case?"
Yan Ruyu simply smiled without answering, a deep meaning flashing in her eyes, and then said, "You don't need to ask any more questions, just settle in. If you need anything, you can tell the maids in the courtyard."
Seeing that she was unwilling to say more, Chunni wisely stopped asking and simply nodded: "Okay, I understand, thank you."
Yan Ruyu nodded slightly: "Then you should settle in first. I have some things to take care of, so I won't bother you any longer."
After that, she turned and left.
Chunni hurriedly escorted her to the courtyard gate, and only after watching Yan Ruyu's figure disappear at the end of the corridor did she turn around and return to the courtyard.
After leaving the small courtyard, Yan Ruyu went straight to a secluded corridor in the mansion.
The corridor is lined with dense bamboo groves. When the wind blows, the bamboo leaves rustle and cover the sound of footsteps.
She walked to the middle of the corridor, stopped, calmly scanned her surroundings, and said softly, "Come out."
As soon as he finished speaking, a black figure silently emerged from the bamboo forest, knelt on one knee, and said in a low voice, "Your subordinate is here."
The newcomer was a bodyguard, dressed in black, with a lithe figure and a black mask covering his face, revealing only a pair of sharp eyes.
Yan Ruyu said, "Go and send a clever female bodyguard over here. Disguise her as a maid and have her enter and leave the courtyard to handle Chunni's affairs."
"Yes," the guard replied respectfully.
Yan Ruyu thought for a moment: "There's no need to interfere with her actions, nor to let her notice anything unusual."
Also, keep an eye on the movements of everyone else in the household. If anyone tries to approach her courtyard, report it immediately.
"Yes," the guard replied again, then vanished into the bamboo forest in a flash.
Yan Ruyu stood on the corridor, looking towards the west courtyard, a faint smile playing on her lips.
The night is deep.
The courtyard of the governor's mansion was so quiet that you could hear the soft rustling of the grass.
The red lanterns hanging under the eaves swayed slightly in the wind, and in the dim light, Governor Ding's shadow stretched long on the ground.
There were guards both inside and outside the gate, and he had tried several times but could not get out of the mansion at all.
"That bastard Su Zhenhai!" Governor Ding spat inwardly, then turned and paced back and forth.
"A bunch of stubborn fools!" Governor Ding gritted his teeth, the veins at his temples throbbing slightly.
Despite it being his own residence, he lived like a prisoner.
He had barely slept for the past two days, tossing and turning in bed, his mind filled with the sounds of danger outside. His eyes were bloodshot, and there were dark circles under his eyes, making him look like a rabbit with bloodshot eyes.
He knew in his heart that he was trapped here, and the situation outside would only get worse.
Today, in particular, made him extremely uneasy—Liu Jiulang's three doubles had been beheaded.
This is not a good sign.
He took a deep breath, about to turn around and go back to his room to think things over again. If all else failed, he would have to resort to a less desirable option.
As soon as I turned around, a strange gust of wind suddenly rushed towards me.
It carried a chilling aura, mixed with a hint of murderous intent.
Governor Ding's heart skipped a beat. He instinctively turned his head and saw a silvery, cold light pierce through the night, shooting straight at his face like lightning!
The cold light came swiftly and fiercely, the wind from the sword stinging his cheek. Prefect Ding was so frightened that his heart clenched, and he staggered back three feet, barely avoiding the fatal blow.
"An assassin!" he shouted, his voice trembling almost imperceptibly. "Help!"
He called out twice, but the courtyard remained eerily quiet, and no one answered.
Before he could think any further, the assassin's second sword was already thrusting towards him.
The sword was aimed directly at his chest, at a tricky angle, and with tremendous force.
Governor Ding only had time to lunge to the side, tripping and falling onto a nearby stone bench. He rolled over, his fingertips brushing against the cold ground, barely avoiding the sword's edge.
The longsword pierced the stone bench with a "thud," sparks flying everywhere, demonstrating the force of the blow.
Ignoring the pain in his body, he scrambled down to the corridor.
The assassin followed closely behind, his black robes flashing a blur in the night. His long sword moved with impenetrable speed, each strike aimed at vital points, leaving no room for error.
Governor Ding was panting heavily, his back was soaked with cold sweat, his robe was torn in several places, and his skin felt a stinging pain.
He occasionally glanced back, only to see the cold, piercing eyes beneath the assassin's mask, devoid of any emotion, only chilling killing intent.
Governor Ding was filled with both fear and resentment. He feared that he would die here today, and he resented that Su Zhenhai had trapped him here without even a decent guard.
"Su Zhenhai! You bastard! If I don't die today, I'll skin you alive!" he roared as he ran, his voice hoarse.
The only response he received was the sound of the assassin's sword cutting through the air.
Having narrowly avoided the sword's edge once again, Governor Ding's legs buckled, and he fell onto the steps of the corridor.
He tried to get up, but felt completely drained. He could only watch helplessly as the assassin approached step by step, raising his longsword once more. The cold light made his pupils shrink.
Just then, the sound of hurried footsteps came from afar, and someone shouted, "Help! The governor has been assassinated!"
Governor Ding felt as if he had grasped a lifeline, and his spirits lifted.
Immediately afterwards, countless lanterns surged from all parts of the mansion, and the orange-red light instantly filled the entire courtyard.
Soldiers, armed with swords and spears, swarmed in and quickly surrounded the courtyard, the sound of blades being drawn echoing throughout.
