Chapter 198 A sudden vision
Chapter 198 A sudden vision
The next morning, before Cheng Yuwei had fully woken up, she heard hurried footsteps outside. She frowned and just as she sat up, Ling Xiaotian hurried into the room, his expression grave.
"What's wrong?" Cheng Yuwei woke up immediately, a hint of worry flashing in her eyes.
"The sentries on the front lines just reported that a Zhao army unit seems to have crossed the border last night and is approaching our supply route," Ling Xiaotian said as he quickly dressed. "The situation is more urgent than we anticipated. They're moving faster than we anticipated."
Cheng Yuwei was stunned for a moment, then nodded: "I will go to the intelligence room right away to check the information and see if I can find more relevant information. You must also complete your deployment as soon as possible. We can't passively take the beating."
"Okay, but you have to be careful." Ling Xiaotian supported her shoulders and reminded her, "Don't let yourself get too tired."
Cheng Yuwei smiled slightly: "Don't worry, I'm not that fragile."
Gaps in intelligence
In the intelligence room, Cheng Yuwei compared the clues from a few days ago with the current trends, and found several seemingly unrelated but intriguing points. She pondered for a moment and called over the assistants responsible for analysis.
"This intelligence report mentions a change in the Zhao army's supply delivery route, but the exact direction is unknown," she said, pointing to a map. "If they've bypassed the original port and departed from this area, they're likely preparing for this surprise attack."
The assistants nodded one after another, and someone suggested, "Then can we send people here to set up an ambush and cut off their logistical supply?"
Cheng Yuwei shook her head: "If they dare to do this, they will definitely not let us find out their exact location easily. Any rash action may alert the enemy. We need more accurate intelligence."
At this moment, a spy hurried in: "Miss Cheng, we just intercepted a secret letter from the Zhao army!"
Cheng Yuwei took the letter, glanced at it quickly, and her eyes narrowed slightly. "This letter mentioned that their assault team is still waiting for some kind of signal. This means that the enemy's actions have not yet been fully launched."
She handed the letter to her assistant. "Immediately dispatch more personnel to monitor their possible movements and try to find more evidence before the signal is sent."
An episode in the camp
In the afternoon, Cheng Yuwei rushed to the headquarters with the compiled report, but was stopped by several soldiers on the way.
"Miss Cheng, have you forgotten something?" the leading soldier asked with a smile.
"What did you forget?" Cheng Yuwei looked confused.
The soldier pulled out a small wooden box from behind his back and handed it to her. "The general specifically instructed us to prepare this. He said it's a 'safety amulet' for you."
Cheng Yuwei was stunned for a moment. When she opened the box, she saw a small silver dagger with delicate patterns engraved on the handle. She looked up at the soldier and asked, "Did he prepare this specially?"
"Yes, the general said that you are always running around and have no time to take care of your own safety. This dagger may be of help."
Cheng Yuwei held the dagger, her heart warmed. She pursed her lips and said with a smile: "Okay, I will definitely take it with me."
The enemy is ready to move
After nightfall, Ling Xiaotian summoned his generals to discuss tactics. After analyzing the intelligence gathered during the day, they had largely pinpointed the Zhao army's likely attack routes. Despite this, the enemy's intentions remained unclear.
"The Zhao army's actions this time are ostensibly intended to cut off our supply lines, but I have a strong suspicion they have other motives." Ling Xiaotian glanced at the crowd and said in a deep voice, "If they were simply after supplies, they could have easily deployed their frontal forces without resorting to a detour."
Cheng Yuwei also added: "I found something unusual. According to the letter we intercepted, the Zhao army mentioned 'special teams' and 'signals'. This means that their goal may not be related to supplies, but something else."
The generals looked at each other in confusion. A lieutenant asked, "What do they want?"
"It's very likely a surprise attack against us, or a further strategic action." Ling Xiaotian analyzed calmly, "In any case, we can't just sit there and wait for death."
He turned to Cheng Yuwei: "Yuwei, what suggestions do you have?"
Cheng Yuwei thought for a moment and said, "We can create an illusion first, making the Zhao army mistakenly believe that we have noticed their actions and have made targeted deployments. This way, their plan may have a chance to be exposed."
Ling Xiaotian nodded: "Okay, I'll do as you say."
Determination in the Dark Night
Late at night, Cheng Yuwei stood alone outside the tent, lost in thought as she gazed into the darkness in the distance. Ling Xiaotian came over and put his coat on her.
"Why are you still not asleep so late?" he asked in a low voice.
"Xiaotian, have you ever thought about what kind of situation we will face if Zhao Jun's plan succeeds?" Cheng Yuwei asked softly.
Ling Xiaotian held her hand and said firmly, "I never think about the possibility of failure. As long as we are together, no matter how great the difficulties are, we can overcome them."
Cheng Yuwei turned to look at him, a complex emotion in her eyes: "But I always feel that there are some things we can't control, such as those enemies hiding in the dark."
Ling Xiaotian gently pulled her into his arms: "Yuwei, remember, no matter what happens, I will protect you. Not just now, but forever."
Cheng Yuwei leaned in his arms, feeling his warmth, but there was still a lingering uneasiness in her heart. She knew that this storm had just begun.
