Chapter 77, Chapter 61 of the First Year of Junior High
Children's Day is just around the corner, like a mischievous little elf, bouncing around in the hearts of our homeroom teacher, Ms. Zhang, and all the first-year students.
Teacher Zhang stood on the podium, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. She cleared her throat and said, "Classmates, Children's Day is just around the corner! Our class needs to choose a wonderful performance. Everyone, please share your thoughts."
As soon as Teacher Zhang finished speaking, the classroom erupted in excitement. Li Shiqing jumped up, her ponytail swaying with the movement, and said excitedly, "Teacher, I think we can put on a fairy tale play called 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.' It would be so beautiful! The girls could all wear pretty princess dresses and dwarf costumes, and the boys would be so cute playing the dwarfs."
Hearing this, Liu Yixin, who was standing next to her, pursed her lips, stood up slowly and said, "Snow White has been performed to death. I suggest we do a skit. Skits are so much more interesting. We can create our own and even incorporate funny stories from our class."
This caused quite a stir. The students split into two camps. Most of the girls supported Li Shiqing, chattering excitedly about Snow White's costumes and set design. The boys, on the other hand, favored Liu Yixin's suggestion, feeling that the skit could be as funny as possible and showcase their humorous talents.
Looking at the chaotic classroom, Teacher Zhang smiled helplessly and said, "Everyone, please calm down and let's vote to decide."
The voting results came out, and the skit won by a narrow margin.
Li Shiqing looked unconvinced and muttered, "What's so good about skits? They're definitely not as appealing as fairy tales."
Liu Yixin smiled smugly and said, "Shi Qing, just you wait and see, our skit will definitely make the whole school laugh until they're bent over."
Next came the tense skit creation phase. Liu Yixin volunteered to be the scriptwriter, forming a creative team with several other students. They huddled together, heads close together as if plotting something big.
Liu Yixin frowned and thought for a while, then her eyes lit up and she said, "Let's write a story about time travel to ancient times. There's a modern student who falls asleep during an exam and wakes up to find himself in an ancient exam hall, where a series of funny things happen."
Everyone nodded in agreement, finding the idea quite novel. However, as they wrote, problems arose.
One student scratched his head and said, "The examination system in ancient times was so different from now. How are we supposed to write those classical Chinese lines?"
Another classmate chimed in, "Besides, I'm not very good at describing ancient scenes either, what should I do?"
Liu Yixin patted her chest and said, "Don't worry, we can ask our Chinese teacher for help. He can tell us about ancient knowledge and help us polish our lines."
So, the students in the creative team followed their Chinese teacher like a group of little tails. The teacher was both amused and exasperated by their enthusiasm, and patiently explained the process and rules of the ancient imperial examinations to them, even helping them write some sample lines in classical Chinese. After several days of hard work, the script for the skit was finally completed.
The casting process was another lively affair.
Teacher Zhang asked, "Who wants to play the lead role, the modern student who travels back to ancient times?"
The students all raised their hands, eager to get this important role.
Li Shiqing also raised her hand high and said, "Teacher, I want to give it a try. Although I wanted to play Snow White before, I think this role is also very challenging, and I can play it well."
Liu Yixin glanced at her with some surprise, not expecting her to take the initiative to participate in the skit performance.
Finally, after the audition, Li Shiqing won the lead role thanks to her rich expressions and fluent lines.
Liu Yixin smiled and said to her, "Shi Qing, it seems you really are an all-rounder. Perform well, and don't ruin our skit."
Li Shiqing winked mischievously and said, "Don't worry, I'll definitely impress everyone."
Rehearsals began, but new problems arose. The student playing the ancient examiner couldn't remember the long classical Chinese lines and would stutter when nervous.
Teacher Zhang anxiously instructed from the side: "You need to understand the meaning of the lines, imagine yourself as that old-fashioned examiner, and then you can speak naturally."
The students who played the pageboys couldn't help but laugh, especially when they saw Li Shiqing wearing a modern school uniform but speaking ancient language in a serious manner. The contrast was just too funny.
Li Shiqing put in a lot of effort to play her role well. She would memorize her lines during breaks between classes and even asked Liu Yixin to help her rehearse.
While acting alongside her, Liu Yixin offered suggestions: "You can exaggerate your expression a bit more, and your tone here should be more surprised."
Li Shiqing did as instructed, then asked, "Wouldn't that be too over-the-top?"
Liu Yixin shook her head and said, "No, that's how it has to be in a skit. You have to fully engage the audience's emotions. Look, like this line, 'I have traveled through time, where am I?' You can widen your eyes, spread your arms, and show a particularly confused look."
Li Shiqing tried it out, and Liu Yixin clapped her hands and laughed, "Yes, that's it! It's great!"
With everyone's joint efforts, the rehearsals gradually got on track.
Finally, Children's Day arrived. The first-year students, dressed in their carefully prepared costumes, were both nervous and excited backstage.
Li Shiqing took a deep breath and encouraged herself: "Come on, we can do it!"
The skit began, and Li Shiqing, playing a modern student, immediately drew laughter from the audience. Her bewildered expression and comical modern lines clashed with the ancient setting, yet were undeniably amusing. When the scene depicted an ancient examiner testing her knowledge of classical Chinese, her awkward answers elicited even more uproarious laughter. "Zhihu zheye, I think I've only ever seen those in Chinese class, how am I supposed to answer this?" Her scratching her head and looking bewildered made the students in the audience double over with laughter.
Liu Yixin watched the performance backstage with a satisfied smile on her face. The entire skit proceeded smoothly thanks to the students' excellent performance, with laughter and applause rising and falling. After the performance, the first-year junior high class's skit won first prize in the whole school.
Teacher Zhang happily said to the students, "You guys were fantastic! This is the result of our joint efforts. This Children's Day has become even more unforgettable because of this wonderful skit!"
The students cheered with joy, and Li Shiqing and Liu Yixin hugged each other tightly. In this process full of joy and challenges, they not only gained the joy of success but also enhanced their friendship. The Class 1 family also became more united and warm because of this performance.
