Chapter 199: Returning Home
The fragrant and rich broth was bubbling in the earthenware pot. He took a deep breath of the aroma before standing back and guessing, "Is this for Brother Lu?"
"Hmm." She put the lid back on, then went to the other side to get some things. Afraid of upsetting him, she explained, "Life in prison isn't good. Cold porridge and spoiled food, hunger and beatings are common. Go and ask Granny Mei to fetch a doctor."
"Oh." He turned and left without the slightest hesitation.
Ji Meiqing looked at the hot soup again, and after a while, she took it down, scooped up a spoonful, and tasted it herself. When she felt the taste was just right, she took it to him.
Lu Yu also emerged from behind the screen, wearing a white suit, his face thin, and his eyes even more deep and bright.
Ji Meiqing hurriedly put down the soup and went to look at him. His clothes, which used to fit him well, were now loose and baggy, making him look like a spoiled rich kid.
"How are you? Let me see your wounds." She anxiously pushed him to sit down on the edge of the bed. Fortunately, there was a heater in the room, and he was dressed very lightly, so it wasn't too cold.
She pulled off his clothes and looked at the scabs on his body, surrounded by bluish-purple marks.
Her fingers trembled as she couldn't help but reach out to touch him, but he grabbed them. Lu Yu smiled, pulled up his clothes, and comforted her, saying, "I'm fine."
She looked up at Lu Yu, and after a long while, she hugged him tightly.
"I know it hurts. I'm sorry, we've hurt you." She hugged him tightly, resting her chin on his shoulder.
Lu Yu stood frozen, unsure how to move. She cried, her tears dripping onto his clothes, soaking his back.
She added, "The Ji family's matter won't just end like this. I will make them pay the price they deserve. Prince Shangguan also said he would help us."
"Shangguan," he repeated, his expression somewhat unwell. Ji Meiqing looked at him, asking curiously, "What's wrong?"
Hearing another man's name come out of her mouth only made her feel a little uncomfortable, but unfortunately Ji Meiqing didn't realize it and didn't know what was wrong with him.
"If he hadn't intervened, those people definitely wouldn't have let us off the hook. We should really thank him."
"It's just officials protecting each other." He was getting impatient. It was their time now, and he didn't want to hear anyone else's name from his mouth.
Ji Meiqing also lowered her eyes, "It's not just about officials protecting each other; they've tried to kill you several times. We can't tolerate this any longer."
"So, what do you plan to do?"
"The Ji family is probably aware of the outcome of your release by now, so they should be quite angry. They naturally can't afford to worry about the restaurant, so we must give them a taste of their own medicine."
“But the Ji family’s wine is already top-notch. What are you going to do? Are you going to put croton oil in it? Don’t forget, the Ji family can slightly outperform us just by relying on their long-term customers.” He got up from the bed, his expression somewhat serious. Ji Meiqing stared blankly at his appearance.
"Sister, the doctor is here." Ji Tianci knocked on the door from the outside, breaking the silence inside. She tidied herself up before opening the door.
The doctor stood in the courtyard and looked familiar. She couldn't remember him, but the person behind the doctor did.
"Sister Meiqing." She smiled, casually putting her arm around Meiqing's, and said with a laugh, "It's me. Don't you remember me?"
"Should I remember you?" Her face immediately darkened; she had invited a doctor and, incidentally, brought back a love rival.
Seeing this, Granny Mei immediately came over and pulled Ji Meiqing aside, saying, "The old doctor in this family has excellent medical skills. Let him take a look first, and then we can talk about other things."
Although she was somewhat unwilling, she had no choice but to agree for the time being.
"Please come in, doctor." She led the way to the room, then stopped the girl.
The girl asked, puzzled, "Sister Meiqing, what's wrong?"
"It's just a doctor's visit, no need for me to help." She closed the door, leaving the girl feeling rebuffed.
Looking at the doctor, he realized what was going on and apologized to her, saying, "My daughter is being unreasonable. I apologize to you."
"It's alright, I won't shift the blame. You are you, and she is she, look." She walked to Lu Yu's side and coaxed him to take off his shirt.
The doctor examined the wound for a long time before saying, "Did they use a whip with saline solution? It's a miracle that the wound can still scab over."
Ji Meiqing was startled. "What did you say, salt water?"
"A whip soaked in salt water will not help the wounds heal when it is used to strike the body; on the contrary, it will make the pain worse. If it is not stopped, it may even cause death from the pain."
He explained, then looked at Lu Yu on the bed, still as calm as ever. He also looked at Ji Meiqing, then quickly put on his clothes, and said in that nonchalant tone, "I'm fine, it's all scabbed over."
"I have some medicine here. Applying it regularly will help you recover faster."
"No."
"Give me."
The two spoke at the same time, and Lu Yu glanced at her before turning his back. Ji Meiqing looked at the doctor with a resentful expression and repeated her answer.
"Give it to me first, and also give me any other medicine that can help the wound heal."
The doctor smiled slightly and went to the side to write up the prescription. Lu Yu, however, suddenly became angry for no apparent reason.
"Do you have a lot of money? You just spend it so carelessly."
She was too lazy to say anything more to him and simply said, "I don't know how to be thrifty, I only know to use whatever is convenient. Besides, this is for you, I wouldn't care about anyone else."
"Should I act like I'm really touched?" he asked, looking at her with a sarcastic tone that puzzled Ji Meiqing.
"I care about you and this is what I get in return?" She looked at him, and after a moment of stalemate, she decided to go over and pay the money.
Lu Yu couldn't stop her; once the prescription was written, she wanted to go get the medicine. Lu Yu tried to stop her, but she locked him in the room.
"You better behave yourself," she warned coldly. "You're a grown man, yet you act like a child."
As soon as these words were spoken, the activity inside immediately stopped. Ji Meiqing looked at the door and couldn't help but smile.
Ji Meiqing, who was still just a young man, felt like an old cow eating young grass. Her past and present lives combined were enough for her to be his mother.
