Fortunately, Lu Yao had several letters of introduction stamped with official seals with him.
You can just fill out a form for her to check into the hotel.
As dusk fell, the car entered Ping'an Town.
Ping'an Town is not large. There is a main street running from east to west, with supply and marketing cooperatives, restaurants, post offices, and a few mud-brick houses on both sides.
The snow on the street has been swept away and piled up on both sides of the road.
Residents on both sides poured their garbage—rotten vegetable leaves, toilet paper, you name it—onto the snowdrifts, turning them into filthy, hard iced piles.
Lu Yao parked his car at the entrance of a large courtyard, where a wooden sign hung.
White background with red lettering: Ping'an Town Workers, Peasants and Soldiers Brigade.
Below the sign was a small wooden plaque with the words "State-owned" written on it.
"We've arrived, get off the bus."
Lu Yao turned off the engine.
Zuo Xiaoying peered out of the car window, her big eyes sparkling with curiosity:
"Brother Wa, this is the inn?"
"Um."
Lu Yao rummaged through the glove box and pulled out a brown paper envelope containing several stamped letters of introduction and a stack of loose change.
"You stay seated, I'll go in and ask first."
The inn had two wooden doors. Pushing them open, a wave of heat and the smell of a coal stove hit you.
The foyer wasn't large; facing us was a wooden counter painted a dark green, with its edges worn white.
Behind the counter sat a woman in her early teens with curly hair, wearing a blue cloth blouse and dark blue arm sleeves.
She was eating sunflower seeds and reading the newspaper when she heard the door open and looked up.
"A hotel?"
The woman spat the sunflower seed shells onto the ground and stood up.
"Yes, two."
Lu Yao walked to the counter.
The woman looked him up and down:
"Where's the letter of introduction?"
Lu Yao took out a letter of introduction from his pocket and handed it over.
The woman took it and held it up to the kerosene lamp to look at it. After a few glances, she looked at Lu Yao again:
"Are you from Jiapigou? The militia company commander?"
"right."
The woman nodded and returned the letter of introduction to him.
"one person?"
"There's also a younger sister. She's in the car."
The woman craned her neck to look outside:
"Do you have a letter of introduction? She needs one."
"have."
Lu Yao handed over Zuo Xiaoying's card as well.
The woman took it, glanced at it twice, and then looked Lu Yao up and down:
"You two share the same last name?"
"She's from the same village. Her grandfather asked me to bring her out to take care of some business."
Lu Yao took the letter of introduction back and asked, "Can you open it?"
The woman nodded, pulled a large notebook from a drawer, opened it, picked up a dip pen, filled in the date in a box, and then asked:
"How many days will you stay?"
"One night, leaving tomorrow morning."
The woman quickly wrote a few strokes, then looked up and asked:
"Single room or regular room?"
"What's the price?"
"A single room is 1.5 yuan, a double room is 0.8 yuan per person, and a shared room is 0.5 yuan per person. Since there are two of you, a double room will be fine, it's cheap."
Lu Yao thought for a moment:
"Let's get two private rooms."
The woman paused for a moment, then added a few more strokes to her notebook, tore off two tickets, and pushed them over along with two wooden signs.
"The single rooms are all in this row, number seven and number eight. The toilet is in the backyard, and the hot water is at the east end of the corridor. Breakfast is served at six in the morning, and we won't wait for latecomers. The rent is paid in advance, three yuan for two rooms, plus a one-yuan deposit, for a total of one yuan."
Lu Yao counted out a few dollars from his pocket and handed them over.
After receiving the money, the woman took out two keys from under the counter. Each key had a wooden tag attached, with the room number written on it in calligraphy.
"The bedding is all inside. Don't go visiting other people's rooms at night. Lights out at 10 p.m."
After the woman finished speaking, she picked up the newspaper again and continued eating sunflower seeds.
Lu Yao took the keys and went out the door. Zuo Xiaoying had already gotten out of the car and was standing next to the jeep, looking around.
She was wearing the new cotton-padded jacket that Lu Yao had paid for, with a green headscarf wrapped around her head, and her face was red from the cold.
"Brother Wa, is it okay to stay here?"
"Yes. Let's go."
Lu Yao took a canvas bag from the trunk, locked the car door, and led Zuo Xiaoying into the hotel.
The corridor was narrow, with half of the walls painted green and the other half white.
The light bulbs were dim and there was only one every long distance.
Upon reaching the door of number seven, Lu Yao handed the key to Zuo Xiaoying:
"You stay in this room, I'll stay in number eight, they're next to each other. Call me if you need anything."
Zuo Xiaoying took the key but didn't move.
"What's wrong?"
Zuo Xiaoying lowered her head and whispered, "Brother Wa, I...I'm scared to be alone."
Lu Yao glanced at her: "What are you afraid of? This is a hotel, not some desolate wilderness."
"I've never stayed in a hotel before..."
Zuo Xiaoying looked up at him expectantly and asked:
"Can't we share a room? I promise I won't say anything and won't disturb your sleep."
Lu Yao shook his head: "No, they don't allow men and women to stay together. The lady there just asked, and if we didn't both have letters of introduction, they wouldn't even let us book two rooms."
Zuo Xiaoying pouted, wanting to say something, but a man in a gray cotton-padded coat walked over carrying a thermos, and she swallowed her words.
Lu Yao opened the door to number eight and peeked inside.
The room was small, with a single bed, a three-drawer table, and an enamel basin on the washbasin shelf in the corner.
Newspapers were pasted on the windows to block out the outside.
He stepped back and helped Zuo Xiaoying open the door to number seven.
The layout is similar, also with a single bed, clean and tidy.
"Go inside, lock the door when you go to sleep. I'll wake you at five tomorrow morning. We have to get up early, we can't stay in bed too long."
Zuo Xiaoying stood at the door, dawdling and reluctant to go in.
Lu Yao reached out and patted her head:
"You said you would be obedient."
He only hugged Lu Yao on impulse in the mountains, and after being rejected once, he dared not act impulsively again.
I wanted to sleep with him, but he wouldn't let me.
Zuo Xiaoying was a little disappointed; all the excitement she had on the way had vanished.
Lu Yao heard the sound of the door bolt being locked inside before turning around and entering number eight.
He took off his cotton-padded coat and hung it on the clothes rack, then lay down on the bed to rest for a while.
The bed was quite hard, with a straw mat on top and a thin quilt on top.
The quilt was made of cotton, heavy, and had a sun-dried smell.
After lying down for a short while, I got up and went out to use the restroom.
The toilet was in the backyard, a dry toilet, and the cold wind was blowing hard; squatting for a while made my butt hurt from the cold.
On his way back, he passed by number seven, stopped, and listened to the door, but there was no sound from inside.
He went back to number eight, locked the door, and lay down to sleep.
I don't know how long I slept, but suddenly there was a banging on the door.
"Bang bang bang!"
"Open the door! It's room check!"
Lu Yao jumped up and put on his cotton-padded coat.
Looking at the time, it was 1 a.m.
Damn it, who's checking the rooms in the middle of the night?
Flashlight beams were flashing wildly outside, people were shouting, cursing, and footsteps were chaotic.
He walked to the door and was about to open it when he heard Zuo Xiaoying scream from next door.
Lu Yao flung open the door and rushed out.
There were two people standing in the corridor, all wearing blue cotton-padded jackets and red armbands with three yellow characters printed on them:
"Joint Defense Team".
The man leading the group was a man in his thirties with a fleshy face, a large bulbous nose, and a cigarette dangling from his lips. He was shining a flashlight into room number seven.
"Come out! Come out, all of you!"
Zuo Xiaoying stood at the door, wearing a cotton-padded coat, her face pale, her hands gripping the door frame and her head trembling.
Lu Yao stepped forward and blocked her way:
"What do you do?"
The man with the bulbous nose shone a flashlight in Lu Yao's face, making him unable to open his eyes.
"Who are you? What's your relationship with this woman?"
Lu Yao raised his hand to block the flashlight beam, looked at the bulbous nose, and said nothing.
A tall, thin man came up behind him and sized Lu Yao up and down:
"You two, take out your letters of introduction and let me see them."
His tone was harsh, as if he were interrogating a criminal.
Lu Yao turned and went into the house, took out the letter of introduction, and then asked Zuo Xiaoying to go in and get hers.
The tall, thin man took it and examined it under the light, while the man with the bulbous nose stood beside him shining a flashlight.
"From Jiapigou? The militia company commander?"
The tall, thin man returned the letter of introduction to Lu Yao, his tone softening somewhat:
"It's so late, and she's a woman staying at the hotel all alone. Why aren't you keeping her company?"
Lu Yao looked at him: "The hotel doesn't allow men and women to stay together, didn't you know?"
The tall, thin man choked, while the man with the bulbous nose said from the side:
"Stop talking nonsense, what exactly is your relationship?"
"She's from the same village; I brought her out to run errands."
Lu Yao looked at the bulbous nose, unhurriedly:
"What's wrong? Is staying at a hotel illegal?"
The chubby-faced man blushed, choked by his words, and took a step forward:
"What the hell is your attitude? You think you're so tough just because you're a militia member? I'll still arrest you and take you in for questioning! Was that car at the gate yours? Open the door and let me check!"
He reached out and grabbed Lu Yao's collar.
