Chapter 671 My Sister 6
Chapter 671 My Sister 6
The morning sunlight streamed through the cabin windows on Saturday morning, but it couldn't completely dispel the lingering doubt in Yun Si's mind.
Yun Chu's arrangements were thoughtful and meticulous: two bodyguards, Acheng and Xiaopeng, dressed in plain clothes but with upright postures and sharp eyes, accompanied her like shadows.
During the flight to Jinshui City, Yun Si looked out at the rolling sea of clouds and her thoughts returned to that place that held most of her childhood memories and now seemed somewhat distant.
Zhou Hui... that friend who used to share candy and whisper secrets under the covers, her sudden invitation was like a pebble thrown into a calm lake.
As the plane landed, the familiar yet unfamiliar humid air of the south rushed towards me.
Jinshui City has changed a lot, with high-rise buildings springing up everywhere, but the road leading to the welfare home in the old town is still narrow and familiar.
The iron gate of the welfare home looked a bit rusty and mottled, and the noise of children playing in the yard could still be faintly heard, stirring up the softness and bitterness deep in Yun Si's heart.
When Yun Si's car stopped at the entrance of the orphanage, Zhou Hui, who had been waiting for a long time, immediately came to greet her. She was much more mature than she remembered, with exquisite makeup on her face and wearing a trendy dress of the season, and she seemed to be living a good life.
However, just as she opened her arms to embrace Yun Si—
"Sisi! You're finally here! I've missed you so much!" Zhou Hui's voice was deliberately warm and excited, and the smile on her face was almost flawless.
But almost at the same instant, her gaze inevitably swept over Acheng and Xiaopeng, who silently and quickly got out of the back seat.
Although the two were dressed in ordinary clothes, their composed posture, sharp eyes scanning their surroundings warily, and almost synchronized movements all exuded an aura of professional training.
They didn't deliberately block Yun Si, but they naturally formed a protective stance. One of them stepped forward slightly and turned to the side, while the other locked their gaze on a few young and middle-aged men who seemed to be strolling around the entrance of the welfare home.
Zhou Hui's smile froze for a fraction of a second, as if it had been paused.
The eager expression froze on his face, and deep in his eyes, there was surprise that he couldn't completely hide, as well as a trace of indescribable...panic and gloom, which flashed by like a shadow.
She unconsciously pulled her outstretched hand back, then forced herself to remain calm and forced an even bigger smile: "Oh dear, Sisi, who are these two...?"
Yun Si clearly caught Zhou Hui's momentary unease.
More than a year of hard work and Yun Chu's occasional "guidance" have transformed her from the naive and innocent little girl she once was.
She was on edge, but her expression remained impassive. In fact, she wore a more genuine smile of joy than Zhou Hui. She stepped forward and gave her a gentle hug: "Huihui! Long time no see! My family... is quite concerned about my safety and arranged for two of my older brothers to bring me here."
She pronounced the word "home" naturally and casually, which both highlighted the legitimacy of the bodyguards and did not seem like she was deliberately being defensive.
This seemingly casual remark struck Zhou Hui like a hammer blow. She had considered that Yun Si might come alone, or at most with an assistant. Two professional bodyguards?
This was completely beyond her and her adoptive father Zhou Chenghai's expectations!
She glanced quickly at the thugs her adoptive father had arranged at the door—those men were clearly intimidated by Acheng and Xiaopeng's aura, their eyes darting around, and they took two steps back towards the alley entrance. One of them even subconsciously hid the cigarette butt between his fingers.
"Oh my, your family... really dotes on you." Zhou Hui chuckled awkwardly, then quickly changed the subject, warmly taking Yun Si's arm and leading her into the yard. "Come in, come in! Headmistress has missed you terribly too. The children were so excited to hear you were coming."
She tried to close the distance with her body language, but her slightly cold fingertips and a hint of stiffness betrayed her inner unease.
The children from the welfare home gathered around like a flock of cheerful little birds, chirping and calling out "Sister Sisi".
Her innocent smile dispelled some of the tension.
Looking at these familiar yet unfamiliar faces, Yun Si's heart softened. She squatted down to greet them and distributed the gifts she had brought to the children.
Acheng and Xiaopeng stood a few meters away without disturbing her, but their eyes never left Yun Si's surroundings, especially the two men in the corner of the courtyard whose eyes were darting around.
"Look at those two," Yun Si whispered rapidly to Xiao Peng behind her, using the opportunity of squatting down to straighten a child's collar, "Their eyes are suspicious, be careful."
Xiao Peng nodded slightly to indicate that he understood. A Cheng then took a half-step closer to Yun Si without leaving a trace, his broad back almost blocking Zhou Hui's view of Yun Si's side.
Zhou Hui stood to the side, her smile faltering.
She looked at Yun Si, who was surrounded by children and had a bright smile, then at the two bodyguards who stood guard like rocks, and at the few thugs she had temporarily brought along who were clearly intimidated.
Her palms were sweaty, and her mind was a complete mess. It turned out that Yun Si's life really was completely different!
Those two bodyguards were no mere showmen; they possessed a cold, hardened quality that suggested they'd seen it all. A head-on clash?
Zhou Hui was almost certain that her adoptive father's so-called "underworld brothers" were as fragile as paper in front of these two.
The originally meticulously planned kidnapping instantly became absurd and laughable in the face of absolute power and disparity in status, and even... a path to certain death.
Zhou Hui's heart sank to the bottom. She knew that not only had her plan completely fallen through today, but she also had to worry... whether she had already aroused Yun Si's suspicion.
The resentment and twisted jealousy that had been buried deep in his heart for so long, born from his adoptive father's coercion, were now overwhelmed by immense fear and frustration.
"Huihui," Yun Si looked up from among the children, her smile still bright, but her eyes clear and bright, as if she understood something. She pointed to the bag in Acheng's hand, "I brought some snacks for Headmistress and the children. Shall we share them together? Oh, by the way..."
She asked casually, "I heard your adoptive parents' business is quite busy, why didn't they come with you today?"
This seemingly ordinary greeting struck Zhou Hui like a thunderbolt.
Zhou Hui's face turned deathly pale, and she used almost all her strength to keep her voice from trembling: "Ah? Oh...yes, yes, they...they were just about to go out of town to look at some project today, it's such a bad coincidence..."
She explained incoherently, her eyes darting nervously away from Yun Si's gaze.
Looking at her, Yun Si's last shred of hope that "it might just be an unexpected encounter with an old friend" completely vanished.
The orphanage is bathed in sunshine, and the children's laughter still echoes, but a deep rift has grown between the two former friends.
Zhou Hui knew that the wrong step she took could have consequences that neither she nor her adoptive father could bear.
Yun Si, on the other hand, realized more deeply that Yun Chu's words, "One should always be wary of others," were not unfounded worries. This "homecoming" journey, beneath its warm exterior, had quietly transformed into a silent contest and a form of deterrence.
