Chapter 278 Lin Ke Wakes Up
Chapter 278 Lin Ke Wakes Up
"咚咚-"
The sound of knuckles tapping on the door was light and rapid, carrying a hint of restrained urgency.
Zhao Cheng, standing outside the door, paused for a moment, but hearing no movement from inside, and then raised his hand again.
A series of clicking sounds rang out.
The corner of the tent swayed slightly.
Xu Yi lay on her side, her eyelashes trembling, her fingertips curling the corner of the blanket before she even realized it.
A sliver of pale blue morning light peeked in through the gaps in the window paper and gently rested on her hair.
Before she could react, there was a snap.
Wu Yuan's chubby foot slapped her face directly, and her eyes instantly cleared.
He lifted the curtain and peered out.
The candlestick still held a half-inch of wax dripping from it, while the sky outside the window had already faded from its inky black color, revealing a faint, crab-shell-green glow.
The knocking started again.
"Madam Xu?"
A low male voice came from outside the door, its throat sounding frosty.
"My master has woken up. The watchman's drum had just sounded at 3:45 a.m. and the sky... was already beginning to lighten."
Lin Ke woke up at 3:45 AM. Although he was still unable to move, he was fully conscious.
Knowing that Xu Yiyi had written him a letter, he asked Zhao Cheng to bring the letter over and read it, and then instructed Zhao Cheng to invite the person over at dawn.
After handling some more tasks, I went back to sleep.
Sure enough, just as dawn was breaking, Zhao Cheng hurried over to call for help.
The curtains of the low couch on the left made a soft rustling sound first.
Sihai rolled over and lay on top of Sanchuan, rubbing his eyes with his little fists, his fingertips unconsciously hooking the tassels at the corner of the curtain, casting dappled shadows in the morning light.
On the other side, Er'er sat up with her legs curled up, her dark blue hair hanging down to one side, her hair tie had come loose at some point, and her stray hairs were sticking up and flying around, looking like a ball of fluff.
She and A-Yue talked until who knows how long last night, and now she's incredibly sleepy.
She clung to the edge of the couch, looking this way, her eyelids still pressed together. Suddenly, she let out a long yawn, her nose turning slightly red from the cold.
A-Yue remained curled up on the bed, unwilling to move.
"Who's outside, big sister?"
Xu Yiyi stretched and got up. "Lord Zhao came and said that Lord Lin has woken up."
As she spoke, she put on her clothes.
They pulled Wuyuan, who was sitting on the bed, up and changed his clothes.
Seeing this, Sanchuan quickly kicked Sihai away: "Get up now!"
The group moved swiftly and soon followed Zhao Cheng out of the inn.
"Breakfast has been prepared in the manor. Madam Xu may bring her younger brother and sister-in-law to the manor for a meal."
As Zhao Cheng spoke, he led the people through the bluestone alley and across the main street until the vermilion plaque of the Zhechongfu (a government office) came into view.
Xu Yiyi stuffed Wu Yuan into Er'er's arms and followed Zhao Cheng to Lin Ke's room.
The children went with Yan Zhonghui to have breakfast.
A-Yue glanced at it and decided to fill her stomach first.
As Xu Yiyi stepped across the threshold, Lin Ke was holding a bowl of porridge and putting it into his mouth.
Why did you arrive so early?
Lin Ke looked surprised.
Seeing this, Zhao Cheng shrank his neck and took half a step forward, stammering, "I saw that you looked very serious when you gave me your instructions yesterday, so I thought it must be something important and went to the inn at the crack of dawn..."
"Alright, it's getting late. We should be up by this time every day."
Xu Yi waved her hand, not caring at all about being disturbed from her sleep. It was only because she didn't have to work these past two days that she had become lazy and gotten up a little late.
Xu Yi cut to the chase: "You're in such a hurry to see me because of that gold transport ship, right?"
Lin Ke leaned against the couch, the white cloth wrapped around his chest still faintly revealing blood, clearly indicating that his injuries had not yet healed.
"Yes, but not entirely."
He gestured for Xu Yiyi to sit down.
"This ship was originally a gold transport ship from the previous dynasty. It's not that important, but something inside is actually more important."
Xu Yiyi frowned slightly, her fingers unconsciously rubbing her fingernails.
She knew this was the case. After that day, she inquired and found out that the Northern Trading Company was the largest trading company in the north and would not care about that ship of gold at all.
"Just say it! I don't understand."
