Chapter 256 Reclaiming Farmland
Chapter 256 Reclaiming Farmland
It's early autumn on the plains, the air crisp and dry, the sun warm and bright. Ye Wan stands high, overlooking the vast expanse of land. The land before her was once a barren plain, but today, under her leadership, it has been transformed into a place full of hope. Today, she will lead her team in a decision to achieve a higher goal of self-sufficiency: reclaiming farmland.
"Everyone, today we're going to begin cultivating farmland and growing our future food source." Ye Wan stood before them, her tone firm but tinged with excitement. "This isn't just about filling our stomachs; it's the first step toward self-sufficiency. I hope everyone will give their all and maximize the potential of this land."
Everyone nodded, their eyes filled with determination. As a team, they had already weathered countless challenges, each one overcome step by step. This time, farmland reclamation was clearly a key part of their self-sufficiency plan.
Crop Selection and Soil Improvement
The first step in cultivating farmland is choosing the right crops. Ye Wan knew the soil wasn't the best. While there was ample water, the nutrients were relatively poor. Therefore, she needed to choose crops with lower soil requirements and improve the soil to ensure healthy growth.
"We must first understand the pH and nutrient content of the soil, and then decide what crops to plant." Ye Wan took a small bag of soil samples, gently pinched a handful of soil, and directed Wang Hao and Xie Linchuan to conduct soil testing together.
"The soil's pH is slightly alkaline, but it looks suitable for growing drought-tolerant crops like wheat, corn, and some root vegetables," Wang Hao analyzed, pointing to the soil test report. "However, we need to add some organic fertilizer and compost to improve the soil structure."
"Then let's start improving the soil and adding some necessary nutrients." Ye Wan nodded in agreement. "This land should be able to grow some drought-resistant crops, especially wheat and corn. They can provide both staple food and some feed."
Ye Wan then directed the team to begin tilling the soil. Divided into small groups, they picked up hoes and shovels and began working the soil. Tilling the soil was arduous, especially in this area, where the soil was stiff and hard. Each thrust of the shovel required considerable effort. Yet, despite this, every member of the team persevered. Together, they bent over and tilled the soil, and over time, the once-hard soil gradually loosened.
Sowing and irrigation
After tilling the soil, Ye Wan and her team began sowing. After selecting the right crops, they began to sow the seeds one by one into the soil, lightly covering it with a layer of soil to allow the seeds to take root better.
"Remember not to sow seeds too densely, so that each plant has enough space to grow," Ye Wan reminded everyone carefully. "Also, we need to differentiate the types of crops on each plot of land to reduce the spread of pests and diseases."
Xie Linchuan was in charge of directing everyone to sow wheat and corn in different areas, while other members were responsible for planting some potatoes, carrots, onions and other root vegetables. Everyone was immersed in their busy work, full of energy and enthusiasm.
Next came irrigation. Although the plains had ample water, Ye Wan knew that water distribution was crucial. To ensure that every piece of farmland received adequate water, she designed a simple irrigation system.
"Everyone, this is our homemade irrigation canal," Ye Wan said, pointing to the already built irrigation canal. "We dig the canal to bring water to each plot of land, ensuring that every piece of land has an even supply of water."
She had them divide the irrigation canal into sections, each serving a different area of the fields. This simple yet incredibly effective irrigation system allowed them to control the amount of water in each area, ensuring adequate nourishment for the crops even during dry seasons.
After the irrigation system was established, team members began to take turns watering the fields. Each line of water flowing through the land seemed to tell them that this land was nurturing hope for the future.
Witness growth
As the days passed, changes began to appear in the fields. A few days later, the team members came to inspect the fields and were excited to find that the seeds that had been dormant in the soil had finally begun to sprout!
"The wheat is starting to sprout! Look, the corn seedlings are also emerging!" Wang Hao shouted loudly, his eyes full of excitement and a sense of accomplishment.
"Great! These tiny sprouts are our hope for future food." Ye Wan smiled, her eyes gentle yet determined. She knew these tender green seedlings symbolized their hard work on this land and represented the team's confidence in their ability to survive.
Everyone gathered in the fields, watching the young seedlings of hope break through the soil. Their fatigue vanished, replaced by a deep sense of accomplishment and joy. This wasn't just any ordinary farmland; it embodied the team's hard work and dedication, and served as the starting point for their future happiness.
"We finally have our own food. When these crops grow up, our lives will be more stable." Xie Linchuan said with emotion, his eyes full of expectations for the future.
Standing in the fields, Ye Wan gazed at the thriving seedlings, a surge of indescribable emotion welled up in her heart. She knew the hope of this land was gradually blossoming and bearing fruit. And this team, too, had taken deep roots in this land. No matter what challenges they faced in the future, they would have the strength to overcome them.
"The future harvest is the result of our joint efforts." Ye Wan took a deep breath, her voice warm and firm. "This is just the beginning. Our home will get better and better."
As her words echoed in the fields, the team members' hearts were filled with longing and determination for the future.
