Crossing the famine to find the white moonlight

Chapter 358: Further Negotiations with the Generals

Chapter 358: Further Negotiations with the Generals

The green hills remained unchanged, and sunlight filtered through the branches, casting dappled shadows on the dirt paths of the camp. Construction of the fortifications was nearing completion, and the team members were busy and orderly. Ye Wan stood in a corner of the camp, her gaze sharp, yet a tinge of unease welled up in her heart. She knew that although the defenses were gradually taking shape, this was only a temporary peace; the real challenge still lay ahead.

She was not at ease, for on this day she was about to embark on another negotiation with the imperial generals. This negotiation not only concerned her own fate, but also the fate of her entire team and even the future of the homeland she protected.

Xie Linchuan stood beside her, silent for a long time. Finally, he said, "Are you sure you want to go alone? If this negotiation fails..."

Ye Wan turned her head, her expression firm, a faint smile on her lips. "Linchuan, I know what you're worried about. But if I don't go there in person, I'm afraid they won't listen to us at all. You know that the people in the court won't give up their goals easily, and we can't continue to be their vassal."

A trace of worry flashed across Xie Linchuan's eyes, and he frowned: "You know the temper of the generals. If you anger them, I'm afraid it will cause even greater trouble."

Ye Wan took a deep breath, her eyes gentle yet resolute. "I understand. This time, I must tell them that we can't be their tools. We can't let them continue to control our lives. We must make our own decisions."

She patted Xie Linchuan's shoulder and smiled, "Don't worry, I will be careful."

Xie Linchuan nodded, but ultimately said nothing more, silently watching her leave. Ye Wan's figure gradually faded into the morning light, and anxiety built up in her heart as she walked. She knew the upcoming negotiations were destined to be full of twists and turns.

Soon after, Ye Wan arrived at the imperial garrison camp. Standing before the large tent, she looked up at the prominent plaque, a wave of mixed emotions welling up in her heart. She wasn't here to plead for mercy, but to secure a way out for herself and her entire team.

After entering the tent, Ye Wan quickly began her conversation with the generals. The tent was filled with the dim glow of oil lamps. Several generals were already seated at the main seats, their brows furrowed, as if they had been waiting for a long time. Ye Wan walked to the center, scanning each face with her gaze. She said in a deep voice, "Everyone, I, Ye Wan, have come here today not to compromise, but to tell you our position."

As soon as she finished speaking, a middle-aged general glanced at her coldly and said contemptuously, "You are just a bunch of people from the mountains. How dare you refuse the arrangements of the imperial court? Who do you think you are? The orders of the imperial court cannot be disobeyed!"

Ye Wan's heart trembled slightly, but she quickly calmed down and spoke more firmly, "I understand your position and know that the imperial court's orders cannot be disobeyed. However, I beg you to spare our homeland. We do not want to become your vassal. We hope to continue to live our own lives. We are not against the imperial court's rule, but we hope to maintain our independent dignity."

Another general sneered and said casually, "Your dignity? You are just a bunch of guerrillas with no background. How can you fight against the imperial court? Do you dare to fight against the entire country?"

Ye Wan felt a surge of anger at his words, but she remained calm and continued, "I'm not trying to antagonize you. I just hope you understand that our team is self-sufficient. We have the ability to protect ourselves and determine our own future. If you can let us go, we're willing to abide by the rules and won't do anything that threatens the interests of the court."

The atmosphere froze for a moment, and the generals exchanged glances, as if trying to gauge the weight of Ye Wan's words. After a moment, an older general spoke, his voice deep and oppressive, "You make it sound easy, but the truth is not so. Your group may be small, but if you have support behind you, the court cannot ignore it. And if you have no connections, you must obey orders even more. We don't need to listen to your requests, but rather to abide by the court's arrangements."

A chill ran through Ye Wan's heart. She knew this wasn't an easy problem to resolve. She took a deep breath, her gaze sweeping across the faces of each general, finally resting on the elder one. "If you insist on forcing us to make a choice, I hope you'll consider that we don't intend to oppose the imperial court; we simply wish to maintain our independence and freedom. If you insist on demanding our submission, I can only tell you that we will never surrender this homeland."

The generals' expressions grew more serious, and a chill seemed to spread through the tent. After a moment, the elder general said in a deep voice, "You are correct. We do not wish to directly confront you. However, the imperial court's orders are final and cannot be changed. If you continue to insist on your position, I can only tell you that you will bear the consequences at your own risk."

Ye Wan's expression changed slightly, but she still clenched her teeth and refused to give in. "I've made it very clear. We will never compromise, and we don't want any more conflicts. I hope you will think twice before acting."

After the words fell, the tent fell silent. The generals' eyes flickered with complex expressions, but Ye Wan knew she had done the best she could. In the days ahead, no matter how the court reacted, she could only rely on the strength of her team and the support she could find.

Finally, the elder general spoke up. "Alright, since you insist, we won't take action against you for now. But you must remember that the imperial court's orders cannot be ignored. If there's a bigger conflict in the future, don't blame us for not warning you."

Ye Wan was silent for a moment and took a deep breath. "Thank you for your understanding. I hope we can resolve this peacefully without further conflict."

After she finished speaking, Ye Wan turned and left the tent, the generals' complicated gazes following her. She knew that the negotiation wasn't truly over, and the pressure from the court wouldn't go away, but at least she had bought herself a chance to breathe.

Ye Wan was filled with mixed emotions as she left the camp. She knew the road ahead would be even more difficult, but no matter what, she had already held on to her last bit of support for the team and her home.
