Chapter 36 Scaring Away the Official
Chapter 36 Scaring Away the Official
A minister standing next to Ye Mian inadvertently turned his head and caught a glimpse of the dense, not-too-small, teeth marks on Ye Mian's face.
She shouted in surprise, then ran far away from him in fright.
The others looked at Ye Mian upon hearing the sound, and the next moment they retreated as if avoiding a plague, fearing they might be infected with some kind of disease.
"It looks like something bit it."
"I...I...this is..."
Ye Mian stammered, picked up the cloth that had fallen to the ground, and covered his face again.
The emperor's already gloomy face was now filled with even more disgust, his brows furrowed into a deep frown as he shouted, "Imperial Physician!"
The imperial physician, who was standing at the very back, jogged out upon hearing the commotion, circled around Ye Mian to observe him, and then took his pulse.
"Your Majesty, the wound on Lord Ye's face was caused by a snake bite, but fortunately the snake was not poisonous."
In my humble opinion, Lord Ye has been bitten all over by snakes. You would be best advised to take the medicine carefully, otherwise, your skin may fester and ulcerate.
"Bited by a snake?" Everyone looked at him in surprise.
"Lord Ye, where have you stumbled upon a snake pit?"
An official couldn't help but make a joke, which drew laughter from those around him.
"Where between the Ye residence and the palace are there snake dens?"
"Lord Ye, you didn't offend even a snake, did you? Was this a bite as revenge?"
One of the officials winked and made a sarcastic remark.
Liu Lingchuan suppressed a laugh, thinking that it might really be revenge, and it might even be Ye Yaoyao's doing.
He remembered that Ye Yaoyao had once held a small snake in her hand when she was a child, and called it "Huahua," which almost scared them to death.
The scene flashed through my mind: Ye Yaoyao was happily holding up the little snake, introducing her new pet to others, which scared her friends around her so much that they scattered and ran away.
The emperor sat on the dragon throne, leaning slightly forward, his gaze scrutinizing.
"Ye Qing, what happened to your injuries?"
Ye Mian naturally dared not tell the truth, and gave a half-truthful answer.
"Your Majesty, I don't know either. When I woke up, I found my body covered in these marks. The doctor said it was from a snake bite."
After Ye Mian finished speaking, the hall fell silent, and everyone looked at him strangely.
"Lord Ye, have you ever killed a snake?"
"No!" Ye Mian quickly denied, raising his voice a few decibels.
"Are you sure?" The other person looked doubtful.
"Absolutely true!" Seeing that the other party didn't believe him, Ye Mian was so anxious that his face turned red, and he was almost ready to kneel down and swear a solemn oath.
In the Kingdom of Tianlin, there has been a legend since ancient times that snakes are very spiritual and should not be killed indiscriminately without reason.
Ordinary people hold snakes in high esteem and generally dare not offend them.
They found it strange that Ye Mian didn't seem to be lying.
"Alright, it must be the Ye family's fault that has fallen on your head. Ye Qing, go back to your residence and rest well. You don't need to come to court until you are fully recovered."
The emperor frowned, waved his hand impatiently, and didn't even want to look at Ye Mian.
"Yes, Your Majesty."
Ye Mian responded meekly, bowing even lower.
"Retreat!"
The emperor flicked his sleeves and strode away, his steps hurried, with the eunuchs following behind him at a brisk pace.
"Respectfully seeing off His Majesty!" the officials bowed and shouted in unison.
After the emperor left, the officials quickly dispersed, none of them wanting to stay with Ye Mian for even a moment longer. Ye Mian looked at the officials who were avoiding him like the plague, felt a pang of sorrow, and limped out.
He dragged his heavy steps, each step causing him more pain, making his journey incredibly difficult. His figure appeared particularly lonely in the empty palace.
Ye Yaoyao was getting restless at home and was looking forward to going out with Liu Yunshu.
"Mother, may I go out now?"
"Alright, your elder brother's exam is coming up soon, let's go to the temple to pray for peace."
"Yeah!"
[Finally, I can go to the temple to see the monks. Mother will definitely believe in Buddha.]
She thought of several ways to remind them, but she was afraid they would see her as an oddball. In the end, she thought that the Buddha, who saves all sentient beings, was the most convincing.
"Mother, I'll have someone prepare the carriage right away," Ye Yaoyao said, and started to run outside.
"Wait, Yaoyao, we'll go to the temple tomorrow. We'll choose a steward together with Mother later."
After Butler Wang was arrested, they had people post notices to recruit people, and now there is a long queue outside the door.
"Alright! Let them in then!"
The first to appear was a burly man who flexed his arms, showing off his muscles in a workout pose, and said confidently:
"Madam, I'm strong, I can lift and carry things, I'm as good as several people, I'm no problem being the housekeeper!"
We're looking for a housekeeper, not a personal trainer.
Ye Xiyao covered her mouth with a handkerchief, her eyes crinkling into crescent moons with laughter.
“We need a housekeeper, not a laborer,” Liu Yunshu said with a helpless smile.
The big man scratched his head: "I can manage that too. If anyone doesn't listen, I'll pick them up and throw them out!"
As he spoke, he waved his thick arms, making a throwing motion.
Of course, he was asked to leave.
The next man was short and had a simple, honest appearance. He stood sideways with a kind smile on his face and looked timid.
“I used to farm at home. Now I’m looking for work outside, and I can be the manager of the vegetable garden.”
"A steward must manage the affairs of the household and also know how to manage people."
"I've never managed anyone before, but I can manage people like vegetables."
"But we're not vegetables."
The next elderly man walked steadily, bowed respectfully upon entering, and appeared calm and composed.
"Madam, I am very experienced, and many of my excellent stewards are products of my training."
After observing the previous individuals, Liu Yunshu noticed that the person in front of her seemed to have good manners and demeanor, and a hint of anticipation appeared on her face.
[His eyesight isn't very good, and he's a little hard of hearing.] Ye Yaoyao muttered to herself.
Sure enough, the old man continued the next moment:
"It's just that I'm getting old, my eyesight isn't very good, and I'm a little hard of hearing."
Upon hearing this, Liu Yunshu was both amused and exasperated: "You're not suitable either, please leave!"
The old man leaned closer, looking completely bewildered.
"Huh? What did you say?"
Granny Zhang walked up to him and gestured for him to leave.
"Waaah..." A middle-aged man burst into tears as soon as he entered the room, leaving the mother and her daughters speechless.
"Uncle, why are you crying?" Ye Yaoyao couldn't help but ask.
"I saw the notice posted on the notice board. The third young lady is so pitiful. I haven't stopped crying since this morning."
I've always been kind-hearted and can't stand seeing anyone being bullied.
"Why are you crying so much?" Ye Xiyao looked at the big man in surprise.
Ye Yaoyao looked at the person in surprise.
[Tsk tsk! He looks like Wolverine, but he's Little Red Riding Hood at heart.]
The burly man sobbed as he spoke, his eyes brimming with tears. Liu Yunshu rubbed her temples, feeling somewhat helpless.
"Alright, stop crying. Do you have any experience as a housekeeper?"
When talking about her special skills, she immediately perked up and tears streamed down her face.
"No, madam, I work in an embroidery shop, and I'm very good at needlework."
If you need any new clothes made, you've come to the right place.
"We don't need any more embroiderers, next one!"
