Chapter 616 Complex
Chapter 616 Complex
After settling in, Tsunade looked at Konan, who had been silent and somewhat dejected the whole way, and said to Zhang Hai with a playful sneer, "I almost forgot, you're also a little pervert." Her tone was clearly sarcastic, obviously trying to tease Zhang Hai about how he had lost to her at the casino but then showed her "interest."
Upon hearing this, Xiao Nan, who had been looking downcast, suddenly raised her head. Her blue eyes held a hint of surprise and wariness as she looked at Zhang Hai, and her gaze changed. Although she was young, she understood the meaning of the word "lecher."
Upon seeing this, Zhang Hai's face stiffened. He hurriedly waved his hand, his tone tinged with helplessness and a hint of despair: "Hey, Lady Tsunade, you can't just say things like that! Even if I, Zhang Hai, am a lecher, I could never be interested in... in such a young girl!" He was afraid that Konan would really misunderstand, after all, he had come with "good intentions" to "kidnap" her.
Orochimaru's golden vertical pupils gleamed, as if he were quite interested in the conversation. A strange smile curled at the corner of his lips as he stirred things up, "Oh? So, who exactly are you interested in?" He was undoubtedly trying to force Zhang Hai to reveal the truth—that he was interested in Tsunade.
Zhang Hai smiled bitterly to himself. He knew he couldn't tell the truth, or Tsunade would definitely beat him up on the spot. He shook his head helplessly and changed the subject: "You guys rest, I'll go get you something to eat." After saying that, he hurriedly left the room, as if a raging flood was chasing him.
After leaving the house, Zhang Hai headed straight for the town's casino. He entered with practiced ease, and in the familiar environment, he didn't bet recklessly like last time. Thanks to his incredibly perceptive Sharingan and precise understanding of the gambling patterns, he won a small sum and immediately withdrew, avoiding being blacklisted by the casino for consistently winning. He was once again certain that his gambling skills were absolutely fine; his previous crushing defeat against Tsunade was entirely due to Tsunade's sudden, unbelievable "luck" that had restrained him.
Zhang Hai didn't hesitate to spend the money he won from the bet; he bought up all the good food in town. Grilled meat skewers, steaming hot ramen, various pastries and fruits filled his ninja tool bag. He decided to treat the group who had only eaten dry bread for the past few days to a better meal, and also to reward himself.
When Zhang Hai returned to the room carrying bags of groceries, Konan was astonished and her mouth dropped open. Her eyes widened; it was clearly the first time she had ever seen so much food. In her mind, this amount was enough for her, Yahiko, and Nagato to eat for several days. Thinking of Yahiko and Nagato, Konan's gaze fell again; she remembered them starving in Amegakure.
Tsunade looked at Zhang Hai with some curiosity and teased, "Didn't you say you were broke? How come you've suddenly become so generous?"
Zhang Hai placed the food on the table and replied casually, "Lady Tsunade, didn't you know there's a casino here? I won a little while passing by, which is just enough to buy some food." As he spoke, Zhang Hai took out the food items one by one from his ninja tool bag, quickly filling the entire table. The aroma of grilled meat, the steam of ramen, and the tempting scent of various desserts instantly filled the room, making everyone's mouths water.
Konan's stomach rumbled loudly, and she stared longingly at the table laden with food. Tsunade and Orochimaru, while not reacting as dramatically as Konan, also picked up food and began to eat. The room was filled with the aroma of chewing and food, washing away the earlier fatigue and sadness of parting. Zhang Hai watched them, a sense of satisfaction welling up inside him. He knew that although he couldn't completely change their fate, at least for now, he could provide them with a moment of warmth and satisfaction.
Tsunade's eyes lit up at the sight of the sumptuous meal on the table. Her heart stirred with anticipation; this hearty princess had never been able to resist the allure of delicious food. She picked out a few dishes, wolfed down a few bites, and then excitedly stood up, wiping her mouth as she exclaimed, "Great! Great! It tastes wonderful! I have to buy some to take back for Grandpa to try!" With that, she dashed out the door. Zhang Hai and Orochimaru, knowing her personality well, knew that she was most likely heading straight to the casino. They exchanged a glance but didn't stop her. They knew that once Tsunade set her mind on something, no one could stop her.
Zhang Hai placed several sweet treats that children like, such as candies and some delicate pastries, in front of Xiao Nan, indicating that she could start eating. Xiao Nan was a little reserved. She cautiously glanced at Zhang Hai, then at the tempting aroma of the food. After hesitating for a moment, she finally couldn't resist the temptation. She picked up a pastry and took a small bite. Her eyes lit up instantly, and she began to eat it in small bites.
Orochimaru wasn't particularly interested in food; he ate his portion slowly and deliberately, his gaze carefully observing Konan the whole way. With his keen insight into people's hearts, he determined that Konan was just an ordinary girl, without any special bloodline limit or powerful chakra within her. He looked at Zhang Hai with interest and asked in a hoarse voice, "At your age, why would you think of taking an ordinary girl as a student?" His tone carried a hint of puzzlement, after all, he knew that Zhang Hai had grand ambitions, and taking an ordinary girl as a disciple seemed out of character for Zhang Hai.
Upon hearing this, Xiao Nan subtly paused in her eating. Her ears perked up slightly, and although she didn't speak, her eyes were filled with curiosity. Clearly, she was also very curious about why Zhang Hai had chosen her.
Zhang Hai was always cautious when facing Orochimaru. He knew that ordinary words wouldn't suffice, but the truth—that he wanted to use Konan to control the future Akatsuki and the Rinnegan—was even more unspeakable. He pondered for a moment, then explained, half-truthfully, "Although World War II is over, there might be a Third World War. Amegakure's geographical location is special, a strategic point fought over by all sides. I want to train Konan so that she can help me in the future." He gave a seemingly reasonable explanation, packaging his purpose as a prediction of the future war situation.
Xiao Nan paused again after hearing Zhang Hai's words. She chewed her food, seemingly pondering his words. Then, she continued eating as if nothing had happened, but a hint of complexity appeared in her eyes.
