Chapter 64 Clues
Chapter 64 Clues
Wang Manni didn't stay in Shanghai for long before being summoned back. Her grandfather was seriously ill and might not make it. Wang Manni didn't dare delay and quickly bought a ticket back to her small town.
To her surprise, her grandfather wasn't at the hospital; he was lying at home. Wang Manni's first words upon returning were to her mother, "Why aren't you going to the hospital if you're sick?" Wang Manni's mother pulled her outside for a talk, essentially saying that her uncle was unfilial, refusing to feed his father and trying to starve him to death so she could earn money for funeral expenses to build a house for Wang Manni's cousin!
Wang Manni's mother said she couldn't bear to watch anymore; it was too cruel. Just then, they heard Wang Manni's father cry out in pain from inside. Rushing in, they found he had fainted and fallen. They called a neighbor for help and took him to the hospital. After several examinations, the final diagnosis was that his high blood pressure, a chronic condition, had flared up again due to the stress.
After receiving intravenous treatment, Wang Manni and her mother helped her out of the hospital and took a taxi home. Wang Manni couldn't carry herself and had to be supported to walk.
As if things weren't going to go wrong, after getting out of the taxi, as the mother and daughter were helping Wang Manni's father down the steps, Wang Manni's mother lost her footing and stepped on the moss at the edge of the steps. She slipped and fell, and unfortunately, her shoe got stuck in a crack in the stone. The force of the fall was considerable, and when she came to a stop, her shinbone was clearly fractured and deformed. Wang Manni was to her father's left, with her mother separated from her by her dizzy father. Wang Manni reached out but couldn't grab her mother, and could only watch helplessly as she fell and broke her leg.
Wang Manni's mother had lost all feeling in her calves due to the pain. Wang Manni didn't dare move her legs, and helped her father sit firmly on the ground. She quickly dialed the emergency number to ask for help to treat her mother. The hospital didn't rush to treat her mother, but instead reminded Wang Manni that her mother had kidney cancer, which was easier to treat in its early stages. However, treating the fracture would likely require surgery, making the treatment more complicated and requiring careful consideration.
Without hesitation, Wang Manni called Chen Yu, wanting to borrow some money to send the three elderly people to Shanghai for treatment. The medical equipment and conditions in Shanghai were much better than in their small town, and it would also be more convenient for her to take care of them.
"Professor Chen, can I borrow some money from you?"
"Manny, how much do you need to borrow?"
After considering it for a moment, Wang Manni said, "I need 100,000 yuan. My parents and grandfather are all sick and need treatment and caregivers!"
"Both of you are sick? What a coincidence!"
"It's not a coincidence. My dad's high blood pressure flared up because of my uncle, and my mom fell and broke her leg while helping him. When we went to the hospital, they found out she also had kidney cancer. The doctor said it's in the early stages, but the fracture might require surgery, and they're worried it could worsen the kidney cancer, so they want me to transfer to another hospital. I'm planning to go to Shanghai, but I have some money at home, though it might not be enough, so I'd like to borrow some. I'll pay you back!" Wang Manni quickly explained the gist of the situation to save time.
"Okay, I'll have Xiaoqin transfer it to you right away! Do you need me to send a car to pick you up?"
"No need, I'll contact the hospital to arrange a transfer vehicle!"
"Alright, I'll arrange everything here for you. Once you arrive in Shanghai, just follow my instructions." Chen Xu took full responsibility, showing no sign of being stingy.
Wang Manni sincerely thanked Professor Chen.
"It's nothing. You should transfer to another hospital as soon as possible. I'll hang up now!"
Wang Manni hung up the phone, feeling a little relieved.
Around noon the next day, Wang Manni and her family arrived at the hospital in Shanghai. Chen Yu had already arranged a ward for her, which had exactly three beds. Due to the special circumstances, the hospital agreed to let the family move into one ward.
Chen Yu and his family of three came to offer their condolences. "Manni, how are you?"
“My dad and grandpa are both fine, but my mom’s situation isn’t very good. The hospital did a detailed examination on my mom and said that she has a rare case of having only one kidney, which is congenital. If she were normal, a single kidney would be able to meet her functional needs, but now she has kidney cancer, which means she will likely need to have her kidney removed and undergo a kidney transplant.” Wang Manni was somewhat dejected, as she had been under a lot of pressure these past few days.
How's the injury on your leg?
"The TCM department here does not agree to surgery. They can use pressure to reposition the patient and apply external fixation, which is much less risky than surgery, but it requires a longer period of bed rest."
"Okay, just let me know if you need anything, and I'll definitely help if I can!"
Wang Manni looked at Chen Yu with a complicated expression, but said nothing more.
Chen Yu and his two companions visited three patients. None of them were aware of the seriousness of the situation. They were quite happy to see that Wang Manni's friends in Shanghai took her seriously.
On the way back, Chen Yu discussed with the two women that it was time for the six-monthly physical examination, and they should have all six elderly people get a check-up so that everyone could feel at ease.
…………
With nothing else to do, Gu Jia went to the fireworks company to oversee things. Xu Huanshan was away on a short business trip and was expected to return soon. However, while organizing the documents on Xu Huanshan's desk, Gu Jia discovered a sales contract that clearly stated "Blue Ocean" themed fireworks show.
She immediately dialed Xu Huanshan's number, "Honey, have you arrived yet?"
"Honey, we'll be at the office in about half an hour! What's up?"
Gu Jia's tone remained unchanged, "Let's talk about it when you get to the company!"
During that half hour, Gu Jia carefully reviewed the other materials and found several similar novel contracts. Her expression grew increasingly cold, and everyone in the company outside the glass wall could feel the chill.
When Xu Huanshan arrived at the company, the first thing he did was find Gu Jia and ask, "Wife, what's up?"
"Didn't you tell me that all the blue fireworks had been destroyed? You promised me you wouldn't produce them anymore, right? Then what happened to these?" Gu Jia slammed the sales contract on the table.
Xu Huanshan felt a little guilty and forced a smile to reassure Gu Jia, "Wife, don't be nervous. Don't worry, I've told you countless times that you're absolutely safe!"
Gu Jia wasn't so easily fooled. "Absolutely safe? Is there anything absolutely safe in our industry? You saw Shen Jie's accident yourself! When we started the fireworks company, we agreed beforehand that we would take a steady and reliable approach, with safety and stability being our top priority. I don't care about profits. Why did you make this decision on your own? Without discussing it with me? Why do we have to produce such dangerous blue fireworks?"
Xu Huanshan was torn between his feelings and his conscience. He almost blurted out about Lin Youyou, but he held back in the end. Gu Jia was furious, and bringing it up now would definitely lead to the worst possible outcome.
So Xu Huanshan could only suppress his thoughts again and reassure her, "Okay, honey, that's how the fireworks industry is. There are no safe colors. Red, yellow, green—none of them are safe. Our production also meets national standards, so don't worry. I've repeatedly told Lao Yan to be careful when storing them."
"But Xu Huanshan, you told me that blue fireworks are much more dangerous than other colors! Why are you arguing with me like this?"
"Because this is art! The blue ocean of the sky is my dream! And blue fireworks are the most profitable fireworks, which can make up for the tea factory's losses faster! But it's no use talking about this now; the production line can't be stopped, the contract is signed, and breach of contract means double compensation! We can't afford it!"
The argument between Gu Jia and Xu Huanshan ultimately ended with money. Gu Jia genuinely lacked the funds and therefore lacked the leverage to force Xu Huanshan to stop producing the blue fireworks, leaving her with no choice but to remain silent.
